Food For Thought Home Store Presentaion
While you finish the quiz I want to introduce my shelf.  My name is Heather Lorimer, I’m from Smithfield Ut.  I’m a shelf reliance consultant; I teach people how to prepare healthier meals, save time and save money.  I LOVE what I do.   I have been a consultant with Shelf Reliance since the company officially started home parties last April.  That is right we are a very young company, with a lot of growth ahead of us.  If you would be interested in getting in on the ground floor talk to me after.
I wanted to thank Elise for being such a great host and deciding to be a consultant.  As a host she will earn 10% of all sales in free products and 50% off $100.00 for each class that is booked off of this class.  So let’s see if we can help her build her food storage.
As we go though tonight’s class please use your price list as a wish list. Please write down the things we talk about and taste that you like.
Serve Fruit Cup:  Elise is passing out our first sample of the night. This is a fruit cup filled with some of our freeze dried fruits.  Freeze dried fruits and vegetables, can be eaten dry like this or rehydrated and used as you would fresh.

1.     What is your least favorite food prep job?
Chopping onions is mine.  I love onions and my husband wants then chopped tiny.  I do not have the patients to chop onions into miniscule pieces.  Freeze Dried Onions have saved us.  No I don’t have to chop onions I just throw a hand full of our Freeze Dried onions in and tada. No tears, or stinky hands, and best of all my husband and kids don’t freak out when they see an onion.
Pass around onion bag
2.     How many servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended per day?
7 On average how many servings to we get? 3
With Thrive you will always have the healthy foods you need to bring the family together for meal time. Studies have shown that family meal time is key to a healthy diet as well as a happy family.
3.     Why is family meal time so important?
Harvard researchers looked at which activities most fostered healthy child development: play, story time, events with family members and other factors. Family dinners won out.
How many times a week do families sit around the table for dinner? 3-4
Why aren’t we having nutritious family meals as often as we should? Research shows that the #1 reason families don’t eat together is no time to shop and cook. This is where Shelf Reliance comes in!!! Soo exciting!!

Point #1- Nutrition
So what are we doing instead of eating nutritious family meals? -Snacking on junk food.
-Eating expensive, processed convenience food. -Eating fast food or picking up take out.
*Shelf Reliance offers a much better alternative:
Instead of snacking on empty calories…snack on Thrive fruits and veggies
(Serve fruit or yogurt samples)
What percent of foods in your grocery store is processed? 90%
It is easy to eat processed (any food with additives and preservatives) convenience foods especially when 90% of all foods in a grocery store are processed.
What percentage of Thrive foods is processed? Maybe 10%; I like that number much better!
A typical home cooked meal has about 600 calories. How many calories are in fast food meal? 1000 to 1500, which is 2 to 3 times as much! Also, compared to a Thrive meal fast food has two times as much sodium and fat and half as much protein and fiber.

Let’s talk a little bit more about nutrition.

4.     What has more nutrition, freeze dried produce or fresh produce?
Freeze Dried: Pass around veg cup.
Freeze-dried foods are lightweight and easy to store in a handbag or backpack, making it convenient to eat healthy on the go. Freeze-drying involves removing 98 percent of the water and oxygen from foods to preserve them. The American Institute for Cancer Research suggests that while the water and oxygen are removed from foods, the nutritional value of the food is not decreased or altered.
Fruits and vegetables chosen for freeze drying tend to be processed at their peak ripeness, a time when―as a general rule―they are most nutrient-packed. Freeze-dried fruits and vegetables contain the same amounts of antioxidants as their fresh counterparts, according to the American Dietetic Association.
Researchers at the American Institute for Cancer Research have been studying the effects of the phytochemicals and antioxidants in freeze-dried foods on cancer cells found in the colon and esophagus. The researchers suggest that the antioxidants and phytochemicals in freeze-dried fruits and vegetables reach and travel through the blood stream just as they would if they were consumed fresh.
Fresh:
#1 Produce starts to lose nutrients and flavor as soon as it is harvested, so when food has to travel hundreds of miles before arriving at the supermarket, a lot of nutrients and flavor are lost. Furthermore, since manufacturers want the food to look fresh and ripe when it hits the shelves, produce is often harvested too early and then later sprayed with plant hormones to speed up ripening. Since the ripening occurs so quickly and often in some crowded box, the plant
cannot accumulate as many nutrients and as much flavor as it would if it slowly ripened on its own. This explains why a strawberry can have a beautiful deep red color but taste like nothing.
#2 Studies have shown that freeze dried food has more nutrients than fresh food that has been sitting at the grocery store for only three days.
#3: When it comes to eating produce out of season studies have shown that vitamins are reduced by up to 50%. Also, food still loses nutrients even when in the fridge. With Thrive you can eat a variety of fruits of veggies at any time of the year and get the optimum nutrition!!
Canned:
The American Dietetic Association suggests that freeze-dried foods do not require the addition of preservatives to maintain their shelf life. The Mayo Clinic says that this is a significant health benefit when compared with canned foods. Large amounts of sodium or potentially harmful chemicals are used to extend the storage life of canned foods, according to the Mayo Clinic. Canned foods can contain 30 to 46 percent more sodium freeze-dried foods, according to the American Dietetic Association. The heating process during canning destroys from one-third to one-half of vitamins A and C, riboflavin, and thiamin. For every year the food is stored, canned food loses an additional 5 to 20% of these vitamins.
Note: There are nutrients that occur naturally in plants, that can’t be replicated. This is one reason why popping a vitamin pill cannot replace eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.
Point #2- Saving Time: We’ve discussed how Thrive foods can help us eat healthier now how can it save us time?

5.     How long does it take to prepare a typical home cooked meal?
40min-1hr
How long does it take to prepare a Thrive meal? 10 to 30 minutes
No defrosting, chopping, or cooking not to mention the extra time you won’t have to spend on clean up! My top 3 products that save time in the kitchen are freeze dried onions, freeze dried celery, and Freeze Dried chicken.  The next time you are thinking about picking up some take out you’ll remember the convenient, healthy, less expensive Thrive food you have at home!!
6.     If you could make a healthy, tasty dinner for your family in 10 minutes would you?
10 minutes to Dinner:
We are all so busy, with our own commitments; we work, take kids to soccer, do the laundry, exercise, take care of the house and car, volunteer in our communities, read with our kids, and let’s not forget homework.  and suddenly it is dinner time and you have no idea what you are going to feed your family.  Often when this happens to me, we would go out to dinner. spending more money then we should, eating more calories than we should and not really eating anything that we loved.  With Thrive foods you can have a nutritious home cooked dinner at home in as little as 10 minutes.  It takes longer than that to get take out.
A few of the options to get dinner on the table in 10 minutes are:  Minestrone soup, Chicken Salad Sandwiches, Tacos, Chicken Noodle Soup.
Tonight you are going to make chicken salad sandwiches so let’s set the timer and here we go:

Chicken Salad Sandwiches
Ingredients
3/4  cups Thrive freeze-dried chicken
1/4 cup Thrive celery
1/4 cup Thrive onion
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup mayonnaise
Salt and pepper

Directions
Combine chicken, celery, onion and water in a sauce pan over high
heat. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low and simmer until
reconstituted (about 5 minutes). Put the mixture into a colander
rinse with cool water until meat is cool to the touch. Let the water drain. Make sure to get all
excess water out. Combine the cooled chicken mixture with mayonnaise. Season the
chicken mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon onto bread or
crackers.
What do you think do you think you could make dinner in 10 minutes?
What about the time we spend at the grocery store? How many years of your life will you spend shopping and waiting in line? 7 years; I can think of much more valuable things to do with my time!! How much time does the average family spend together in one week? 7 hours...enough said.
****With an innovative program called The Q we will be able to spend less time in the grocery store and more time focusing on what matters most! More details in a minute!
Point #3 Reducing waste and saving money: Now we are eating healthier, saving time…how can Shelf Reliance help us save money? How much do we spend on food every month? About $100-$150 per person per month. A family of four spends about $6000 on food a year. How much food to we throw away every month? 25%; that equals $1500 thrown away in one year. The most expensive food is the food we throw away. Most Thrive foods have a 25 year shelf life. There are many foods that you will never have to throw away again!

7.     What are the 5 main food storage concerns that prevent people from building a home store?
